The premium route Napoleon-Steig leads hikers over natural paths through an impressive rocky landscape with great views. The first stop is the 500-meter-long Retschelfelsen rock massif. From there, a path leads to the newly developed Eisenbahnfelsen with its extraordinary honeycomb formations and washouts in the Buntsandstein.

Other notable points of this tour include the Rauhbergfelsen and the Reinigshof spring with wonderfully fresh and drinkable spring water. Above the valley meadow is the bizarre namesake of the premium trail: the Napoleonfelsen. After a stop at the Palatinate Forest Club hut "Am Schmalstein," a final ascent must be mastered before descending through the Wöllmersbachtal back to Bruchweiler-Bärenbach.

UFFBASSE! - Campaign for considerate interaction in nature

Always behave considerately, friendly, and attentively towards everyone you meet on the way.

Respect nature, do not destroy plants and always stay on the paths.

Remember a garbage bag for the way and take your trash back home.

Please keep your dog on a leash at all times. Other visitors and animals will thank you.

For your own safety, observe all trail closures, even on weekends.

Park only in designated parking areas. Leave room for rescue routes and agricultural machinery.

Give priority to agricultural and forestry traffic.

    Safety information

Especially in autumn, note that fallen leaves on the ground can cover unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or heavy rain, trees or branches may still fall. Under adverse weather conditions, natural paths can become muddy and slippery. Not all rocks or drops are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is required in places. You should expect such trail impairments when hiking. If you find certain sections impassable, you should avoid them. Despite the "unloseable" marking of the premium hiking trails, we recommend always carrying a suitable hiking map for safety, so you can quickly find a safe area in case of thunderstorm or emergency.

    NOTE:

We strive to announce all closures caused by forestry work or hunting parties on this platform. Nonetheless, there can be situations where trails are closed and we were not informed. If you encounter closures or detours on site, please heed the instructions for your safety.

    Roadbook

The starting point of the premium route "Napoleon-Steig" is the parking lot, Fabrikstraße 18, Däumling-Schuhe, 76891 Bruchweiler-Bärenbach.

From here, the route leads over a soft forest track and crosses an old Wehrmacht road at the foot of the Retschelfelsen, an imposing Buntsandstein rock massif about 500 meters long. From here, the route continues along a narrow natural path over the ridge to the newly accessible Eisenbahnfelsen, a real insider tip. Here you can find bizarre honeycomb formations and washouts in the soft Buntsandstein, unique in their kind. At the foot of the Eisenbahnfelsen, you have a wonderful view of the previously passed Retschelfelsen and idyllic villages nestled in the legendary Dahner Felsenland. A natural path leads to the Rauhbergfelsen. At the end of the Rauhbergfelsen is the only DAV (German Alpine Club) base station of the Kaiserslautern section outside the high alpine area.

From here, a descent follows along a narrow trail towards Reinigshof. The route continues on a soft forest path for about 800 meters to the Reinigshof spring. The spring water supplies both the Reinigshof and the DAV hut and is under constant control, making it a real treat and a welcome refreshment. Now the route passes along a splendid valley meadow past a fallen but still vital old oak tree. It then climbs up a soft, springy path, also marked with the yellow dot of the main hiking trail of the Palatinate Forest Club, to the bizarre Napoleonfelsen, popularly called the "Felsenpuppe," the namesake of the premium route. After about 700 meters of level forest path with partly magnificent panoramic views, it goes down at the foot of the Dretschberg rock massif to the hut "Am Schmalstein" of the local branch of the Palatinate Forest Club in Bruchweiler-Bärenbach (opening hours see author tip). From here, the path continues on a loose forest path, passing the Käskammerfelsen (natural monument), up to the "Flecksteinhochebene" (plateau). This plateau is located in the largest non-forested and undeveloped area of the Palatinate Forest and therefore offers panoramic views of the entire Wasgau region and into the neighboring Alsace. A short descent follows along a narrow field path, lined with old field oaks and orchards, down to the Wöllmersbachtal valley back to the starting point of the Napoleon-Steig.

Shortcut: The route leads past fish ponds along the Wöllersbach, and at the Reinigshofstraße you rejoin the Napoleon-Steig marking (9.5 km).
