The approximately 7 km long German-French circular hiking trail is an eventful hiking route across the border between Germany and France. Along the Grenzgängerweg, which stretches over long distances through a varied forest landscape, information boards tell anecdotes from the "border history".

This cross-border short circular hiking route near Nothweiler is ideal for an adventurous family outing. Great views of the castle ruins Wegelnburg, Hohenbourg and Löwenstein reward the initially strenuous ascent to the summit of Kappelstein on the French side.

Along the border path, it goes downhill back to the German side to the "Eisenerzgrube Nothweiler". The mine is open to visitors from April to October.

A tour underground is an extraordinary experience not only for children. Back in the romantic half-timbered village of Nothweiler, the historic Zeppelin fountain in the village centre offers a welcome cool down.

The last section leads back through the valley to the hiking car park, the starting point of enjoyable hikes.

UFFBASSE! - Campaign for considerate coexistence in nature

Always behave considerately, kindly and thoughtfully towards everyone you meet along the way.

Respect nature, do not destroy plants and always stay on the paths.

Remember a rubbish bag for the way and take your litter back home with you.

Please always keep your dog on a leash. Other visitors and animals will thank you.

For your own safety, observe all path closures, even on weekends.

Park only in designated parking areas. Leave space for emergency routes and agricultural machines.

Please give priority to agricultural and forestry traffic.

    Safety information

Especially in autumn, it should be noted that leaves lying on the ground can conceal unevenness, roots, stones or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or heavy rain, trees may still fall or branches fall down afterwards. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can have muddy and slippery sections. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is required in places. You must expect such path impairments when you go hiking. If you consider certain sections impassable, you should avoid them. Despite the "unmissable" marking of premium hiking trails, we recommend always carrying an appropriate hiking map for safety reasons, so that you can quickly reach a safe area in case of a thunderstorm or emergency.

    NOTE:

We strive to announce all closures due to forestry work, hunting societies on this platform. Nevertheless, there are situations where hiking trails are closed and we may not have been informed. If you encounter closures or detours on site, please observe the instructions for your own safety.

    Roadbook

From the car park, the path leads across the border and through the valley to the forester's lodge "Litschhaof" and to the car park at the "Col du Litschhof" with a shelter and rest area. Now begins a somewhat strenuous section, the ascent to the 498m high Kappelstein. The ascent should be taken slowly, as it offers repeated beautiful views of the castle ruins Wegelnburg/D, Hohenburg/F and Löwenstein/F. Now the path leads, partly directly on the border line, downhill to the visitor mine "Eisenerzgrube Nothweiler" (open from April to October, Monday closed) and further to the half-timbered village of Nothweiler.
The historic Zeppelin fountain in the village centre offers a refreshing cool down. Past the church and through the valley it goes back to the hiking car park.
