Geiersteine route

Short, varied, and comfortably walkable premium route.
The Geiersteine route is a short, varied premium route that stands out for its diversity and variety. On narrow paths and springy forest trails, you pass mighty Buntsandstein formations like the (1.5 km) Hornstein. But also smaller, bizarre rock formations in bright red colors line the route. This offers enchanting and appealing views either from the (2.5 km) “Geiersteine,” the (3.2 km) “Runder Hut,” or from the “Hornstein.” Views of the Trifels Imperial Castle near Annweiler, into the wine region of the Southern Wine Route, or the small villages of the Palatinate Forest like Lug with its impressive Friedrich rock, popularly called “Luger Fritz.”
By the way: the silhouette of the Geiersteine towards Wernersberg, with a little imagination, resembles the shape of a dragon.
The route crosses the territories of the two municipalities Lug and Wernersberg.
#Be careful! For consideration and nature conservation
Hiking, walking, strolling, cycling, mountain biking, climbing, trekking, picnicking, forest bathing, chilling and refreshment. Vacation and leisure outdoors should be fun and above all relaxing. This works best when we treat ourselves, other people and nature carefully and considerately. SO: BE CAREFUL AND THINK! Take consideration for all those on the way and especially for nature, so that we can still enjoy it in the distant future.
At www.pfalz.de/uffbasse we have listed some behavioral tips for considerate and careful coexistence.

Safety information
Despite the “unmissable” markings of the premium hiking trails, for safety reasons we always recommend having a corresponding hiking map so that you can quickly find a safe area in case of thunderstorms or emergencies.
Especially in autumn, pay attention that fallen leaves on the ground may conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After storms, trees may still fall or branches may break off afterward. Particularly in adverse weather conditions, natural trails may become muddy or slippery. Such trail impairments must be expected when hiking. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is sometimes required. If you think you cannot walk certain sections, you should avoid them.

An unforgettable premium adventure
What could be better than quickly scrambling up a rock after work, enjoying the evening sun, and truly unwinding? It takes just under an hour from the village center of Lug to the Geiersteine, which offer an unforgettable view over the vastness of the Palatinate Forest. Although the Geiersteine route, at 5.4 kilometers, is the shortest premium hike in the Hauenstein municipal association, it quickly becomes clear after the ascent what this ridge hike has to offer: views and distant panoramas that you won't forget anytime soon.
The climb starts off quite briskly, a bit steep but still easily manageable for hikers of all ages. It takes less than half an hour to reach the first viewpoint, the Hornstein rock massif – recognizable by its white summit cross. A narrow path winds up to the mountain ridge, from which you have a great panoramic view over Lug and the surrounding mountains. A few meters higher there is a cozy spot with seating inviting you to take a short rest.
From here, you hike across the plateau of the western Heischberg towards the Geiersteine. As with all high-altitude paths, the vegetation here exerts its own charm: fragrant pines, rustling deciduous trees, and sunlit tree canopies make the hike a sensory pleasure. The mighty rock monument “Luger Geierstein,” which rises like a 45-meter-high ramp from the mountain, offers a unique 360-degree view. Just for this view alone, it’s worth tackling the Geiersteine route even after a busy day, especially since the ascent is completed fairly quickly. Sitting comfortably on a rock slab, you leave everyday life behind and draw new energy. On clear days, you can gaze out to the plain of the Southern Wine Route. Towering majestically to the east is the Trifels Imperial Castle, seemingly within reach atop the mountain. Looking south, you can even spot the elevations of the Vosges.
After an extended break on the rock plateau, the trail leads back at about 400 meters elevation in the shade of deciduous trees, past bizarre rock formations towards the “Runder Hut.” There is also seating there with a great view of the Trifels and the Wernersberg village lying below in the valley. To get a closer look at the Runder Hut, you need to scramble down a few meters. An east-facing wooden bench at the foot of the rock offers a last resting spot before heading back down to Lug’s village center, the starting point of the hike.
Since some of the wonderful views require a bit of scrambling, the Geiersteine route is not entirely without risk. Therefore, hikers with a fear of heights or children should avoid climbing all the way to the front. Even from a respectful distance, you can admire the impressive mountain landscape.
