Holzlandweg

The varied "Holzlandweg" is best explored as a multi-day stage hike. The circular route, nearly 37 kilometers long, leads through dense forests, past bizarre rock formations, and along bubbling streams. Picturesque places on the hiking trail offer numerous accommodation and dining options.
Anyone seeking scenic variety with magnificent forests, romantic stream valleys, and exciting paths is certainly not on the proverbial wrong track with a hike on the Holzlandweg. In addition, the often almost mystically appearing rock formations are a special attraction. When quietly observing the rock formations, you can spot many fantasy figures. Children are happy to help in this search. But these are not the only highlights of the path that bring joy to children and motivate them to hike.
UFFBASSE! – Campaign for considerate coexistence in nature
- Always behave attentively, kindly, and considerately towards everyone you meet on the trail.
- Respect nature, do not destroy plants, and always stay on the paths. Try to avoid excessive noise and leave the forest before dusk.
- Remember to take a trash bag with you and carry your waste back home.
- Please keep your dog on a leash at all times. Other visitors and animals will thank you.
- For your own safety, observe all trail closures, including on weekends.
- Park only in designated parking areas. Leave room for emergency vehicles and agricultural machinery.
- Give priority to agricultural and forestry traffic.

General advice:
Especially in autumn, be aware that fallen leaves on the ground can conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or rainstorms, trees may still fall or branches may drop. With adverse weather conditions, natural trails may have muddy and slippery sections. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is required in places. You must expect such trail impairments when hiking. If you believe certain trail sections are not passable for you, you should avoid them.
NOTE:
We strive to announce all closures caused by forest work or hunting parties on this platform. Nevertheless, there may be situations where trails are closed and we have not been informed. If you unexpectedly encounter a closure or detour, please follow the instructions for your own safety.

Roadbook
Directly at the station in Waldfischbach-Burgalben, we start our hike on the approximately 37 km long Holzlandweg. We follow the consistently uniform marking with the red H on a white background first through the town center and onwards up to the sports field.
Shortly after entering the forest, we pass a small rock formation, the Galgenfelsen. We immerse ourselves deeper into the magnificent mixed forest and walk on soft forest ground past the Gerstenfels. Then we continue into the romantic Schwarzbach valley. Here we also encounter the Heidelsburg, one of the oldest mountain fortifications of the Palatinate from Roman-Celtic times – a place with mystical charm.
Now the Holzlandweg makes a wide loop before we get to know an exceptionally beautiful and wild romantic path section. Signs already point to the demanding Seelenfelsen path. We enter the path and along an approximately 600 m long rock band we stride over boulders and tree roots. This fabulous hiking experience is pure joy!
At the end of the rocks, the Holzlandweg bends to the left and over the summit of the 426 m high Dinkelsberg we continue through the forest straight into the village of Heltersberg. From the edge of the village, the path leads us steeply downhill and we continue along the Haseltalbach into the adjoining valley with the Hirschalbe stream. The lush green and quiet meadow valleys with the meandering streams are repeatedly refreshing and relaxing, so we often pause here.
The hike between forest edge and meadow valley is wonderful before a longer ascent again takes us through the forest up to the village of Schmalenberg. Notable here are the two architecturally very contrasting towers. After passing through the village, it goes steadily downhill. We follow the lively babbling stream on natural paths and hike in a curve around the mighty Grauhansenfelsen. The rock is located in a small forest clearing and the entire surroundings exert an enchanting charm on its visitors. We continue hiking and the Holzlandweg leads us to the outskirts of Geiselberg. Here we follow Lindenstraße and soon reach the scenic heights, such as the viewpoint "Auf dem Ebig." Meadows and fields accompany us on the way. We hike through Steinalben and enter a large forest area with pleasant forest paths. Gently, it goes down the mountainside and we soon see the first buildings of Waldfischbach-Burgalben. It is not far to the station and we say goodbye to this great hike.
