Sickinger Höhenweg

The “Sickinger Höhenweg” offers hiking pleasure in an idyllic landscape and entices with great views into the Saarland and Alsace.
The Sickinger Höhe region owes its name to the last German knight Franz von Sickingen, who once ruled here. The constant change of different landscapes is wonderful, and the wide views across the land are fascinating. Knightly courage is, of course, not required to hike the Höhenweg, but good fitness is necessary if it is to be completed in one day, as some altitude must be overcome. However, every ascent is worth it, as you are rewarded with fabulous views.
UFFBASSE! – Campaign for respectful coexistence in nature
- Always behave considerately, friendly, and respectfully towards everyone you meet along the way.
- Take care of nature, do not destroy plants, and always stay on the paths. Try to avoid excessive noise and leave the forest before dusk.
- Take a garbage bag for the trip and take your waste back home.
- Please keep your dog on a leash at all times. Other visitors and animals will thank you.
- Observe all path closures for your own safety, including on weekends.
- Park only in designated parking areas. Leave space for emergency vehicles and agricultural machinery.
- Give priority to agricultural and forestry traffic, please.

Safety information
Good fitness and surefootedness are required for the day hike. Leisure hikers should plan the Sickinger Höhenweg better as a two-day stage route.

General information:
Especially in autumn, it should be noted that fallen leaves may conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or heavy rain, trees may still fall or branches may break. Under adverse weather conditions, natural paths may have muddy and slippery sections. Not all rocks or precipices are secured with ropes or handrails. Surefootedness is required in some places. You must expect such path impairments when hiking. If you believe certain path sections are impassable for you, you should avoid them.
NOTE:
We strive to announce all closures caused by forest work or hunting societies on this platform. Nevertheless, there are situations where hiking trails are closed, and we may not have been informed. Should you unexpectedly encounter a path closure or detour, please observe the instructions for your own safety.

Roadbook
We start at the Waldfischbach-Burgalben railway station. Through forest paths, we reach the Klapperbach and walk a stretch through the beautiful valley. Then the first climb welcomes us: a narrow path leads zigzag through the deciduous forest up to the Quatersberg with its large wind turbines. The path runs over the height, allowing us to leisurely gaze across the countryside. After a small wooded area, we reach the outskirts of Höheinöd. We walk slightly downhill and follow soft meadow paths until we reach the Weihermühle excursion restaurant in the Schauerbach valley – an ideal spot for a regional snack. We follow the Schauerbach through the beautiful valley and reach the Altenbach. After crossing the creek, we ascend a natural path. Here it gets especially exciting: bizarre rocks line the path and soon we arrive at the Ramerfelsen. The path adventurously leads between mighty moss-covered rocks – certainly one of the most fabulous landscape experiences on our hike. Through the coniferous forest, the path climbs again to the fertile high plateau of the Sickinger Höhe. After the ascent, we see Celtic barrows here and also enjoy a magnificent panoramic view. We then walk downhill to the Klapperbach. After another ascent, we pass the village Hermersberg and reach the excursion restaurant “Hermersberger Wasserhaus” with a large outdoor terrace. At the forest edge, we walk past the Rohberg and follow the downhill path through the forest back to Waldfischbach station.

Equipment
For our hikes, we recommend the following equipment as standard:
- Sturdy footwear
- Weather-appropriate clothing
- Sun and rain protection
- Sufficient supplies of food and drinks, as there are not always places to eat or shop available or open everywhere.
Even though the paths are very well marked throughout, it is advisable for safety reasons to always carry a suitable hiking map, so that you can quickly find a safe area in case of a thunderstorm or emergency.
