    Attention!!
Due to severe storm damage last week, numerous trees have fallen in the area of Maimont, Peace Cross, Sacrificial Bowl, and Blumenstein castle ruins. The premium trails "Felsenland Legends Trail" and "German-French Castle Trail" are also affected.

These trails are not accessible in the mentioned area and must remain closed until further notice. Strong storm gusts and heavy rainfall have caused significant damage along the route. Numerous trees were uprooted or broken and block the trail. Cleanup work is already underway, but due to the extensive damage and difficult-to-access areas, a longer closure period must be expected. The public will be informed in good time about reopening.

The cross-border premium long-distance trail offers everything that makes a hiker's heart leap. In five stages, the little ghost on the blue markers leads hikers through the mystical world of the Palatinate Forest. The first stage from Dahn to Erfweiler impresses with splendid views from imposing rocks and mighty castle ruins. The route of the second stage to Bundenthal is no less impressive.

With the Drachenfels castle ruins and the legendary Berwartstein castle, this stage offers two unforgettable highlights. The third stage to Schönau, not just because of its altitude meters, is often called the queen stage. Attractions like the Wegelnburg – the highest castle ruin in the Palatinate – or the famous Fleckenstein castle in Alsace make this part of the hike an unforgettable experience. Through idyllic meadow valleys and past romantic forest lakes, the fourth stage leads to Fischbach. The last stage on the Felsenland Legends Trail leads to Bruchweiler-Bärenbach. Along the way lies the Biosphere House with its adventurous treetop path. Towards Rumbach, the Königsbruch nature reserve is crossed via a wooden bridge.

In Rumbach, you should definitely visit the Christ Church with its medieval frescoes. Now there is only one last ascent to the Schützenfelsen before the wonderful stage hike ends at the new Spießwiesen leisure park in Bruchweiler-Bärenbach.

    Safety information

Especially in autumn, care must be taken that fallen leaves on the ground can cover unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or heavy rain, trees may still fall or branches may fall afterward. With adverse weather conditions, natural paths can become muddy and slippery. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or railings. Sure-footedness is required in some places. You must expect such path impairments when hiking. If you consider certain sections impassable for you, you should bypass them. Despite the "non-deviating" marking of premium hiking trails, we recommend always carrying an appropriate hiking map for safety reasons, so that, for example, you can quickly find a safe area in a storm or emergency.

    NOTE:

We strive to announce all closures due to forestry work or hunting parties on this platform. Nevertheless, situations exist where trails are closed, and we may not have been informed. If you encounter closures or detours on site, please observe the instructions for your own safety.

    Roadbook

    1st stage: Dahn-Erfweiler (14.9 km)
We start at the Tourist Information office on Schulstraße in Dahn and follow the "Ghost Logo" towards the cemetery. Here we reach the forest and hike on picturesque forest paths up to the viewing platform at the Jungfernsprung rock. We descend again to Dahn and next hike to the Sängerfelsen, which also offers a splendid view. Past impressive rocks, the hiking trail leads to the Neudahn castle ruins, which we explore on a circular tour. Then it continues through the Moosbach valley to the "Dahner Hütte" (Palatinate Forest club hut, run, please observe opening hours). Over rocky paths, past beautiful viewpoints and massive rock formations, the trail now leads back to Dahn and further to the Altdahn castle group. Here you can discover three mighty buildings: the Altdahn, Grafendahn, and Tannstein castle ruins. A visit to the castle museum is recommended. Filled with impressions, we descend to the first stage destination Erfweiler.

    2nd stage: Erfweiler-Bundenthal (22.1 km)
We start in Erfweiler and hike on sandy paths through the magnificent Palatinate Forest. Gently ascending, we soon reach the first viewpoint on the south side of the Kahlenberg near Schindhard. Shortly after, we pass through the picturesque village itself and walk past orchards towards Eilöchel. At the hiking parking lot there begins the ascent to Eichelberg, where we enjoy a fantastic view of Busenberg. Below a mighty rock wall, we hike along the idyllic bird nature trail and reach too quickly the "Hexenplätzel" parking lot. We follow the hiking trail across Busenberg and already have our next destination, the Drachenfels castle ruins, in sight. After a steep climb, we enjoy the break in the extensive complex with views of the forested surroundings. Refreshments are available afterward at the Drachenfels hut (Palatinate Forest club hut), which is open on Wednesdays and on weekends. Past the St. Gertraud chapel, the trail leads to Erlenbach and further to Berwartstein castle. The visit to the high-level castle requires an entrance fee, but the exciting guided tours are definitely recommended. A castle restaurant is located in the knights' hall. The last section of this stage runs along the massive rock formation of the "Fladensteine" (with a geo-trail) to Bundenthal.

    3rd stage: Bundenthal-Schönau (17.5 km)
Today’s stage is considered the queen stage in terms of altitude meters. We start in the village of Bundenthal and pass the Söller airfield, cross a small valley, and begin the strenuous ascent through changing forest landscapes up to the summit of the "Mäuerle", where heavy battles raged long ago. Past the impressive rocks of the Mäuerle, such as the "Devil’s Table", we now descend on narrow paths to Nothweiler. Here we enjoy delicious flame cakes and, freshly strengthened, start the strenuous ascent to the highest castle ruin in the Palatinate, Wegelnburg (572m). Once at the top, a wonderful panoramic view waits as a reward. Along the ridge, we hike slightly downhill and pass the border to France. Wonderful panoramic views also await us at the castle ruins of Hohenburg and Löwenstein, which we extensively explore. We then follow the spectacular rock trail, which is only suitable for sure-footed hikers, to the forest experience center P’tit Fleck and to Fleckenstein castle ruins. A more comfortable trail to Fleckenstein starts at the entrance of the rock trail and is marked with a red bar. An exhibition informs us here about the special features of the forest and we enjoy the rest area with bistro and souvenir shop. Those who want to visit the nearby Fleckenstein castle ruins can buy tickets here. At the foot of the imposing Fleckenstein castle ruins, we continue hiking to Hirschthal. We now walk a stretch through the idyllic and secluded valley of the Hichtenbach, before turning right into the forest. Here it goes partially steeply uphill over paths and forest trails until we reach the Bruderfelsen, from where we can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the forest and Fleckenstein castle ruins. Just before our destination Schönau awaits the last highlight of this stage, the mighty rock massif of Pfaffenfels, which can be climbed via ladders. The summit conqueror is rewarded with a breathtaking view.

    4th stage: Schönau-Fischbach (19.4 km)
In Schönau, we follow the hiking trail through the Wengelsbach valley up to the Wengelsbacher Hals and further to the Blumenstein castle ruins. On idyllic forest paths, we reach Col du Maimont in France. We explore the Wasigenstein castle located about 500 meters away before starting the ascent to the summit of the Maimont. Past the sacrificial bowl, a flat rock, we hike on forest paths back to Germany and enjoy great views over the region at the Peace Cross. A fantastic section leads us along a long stretched rock ridge. In switchbacks, we then hike steeply down near the border to Zollstock. From here, the path flattens, and we reach the Sauer Valley. In the village Petersbächel, the Walthariklause hiking home invites you to a cozy rest. Next, awaits the nature reserve Pfälzerwoog. On wide forest paths, we reach the hidden forest lake Pfälzerwoog and enjoy the idyll on the available benches. Rested, we then continue uphill to Lindelskopf, where we once again enjoy the magnificent view. We follow the hiking trail further to Ludwigswinkel. Here await us a barefoot path and a sculpture trail. Past the Saarbachhammer bathing lake, we finally arrive in Fischbach, our stage destination.

    5th stage: Fischbach-Bärenbach (12.7 km)
The last stage begins with an idyllic section in the Sauer river floodplain. Shortly after, we turn off to the Biosphere House, where exciting experiences await us on the treetop walk. Then we continue along the Felsenland Legends Trail and cross the Königsbruch nature reserve on a wooden bridge. Back in the forest, we ascend slanting ramps to the Rumberg. Picturesque forest paths lead us past beautiful rocks to the Christkindelsfelsen. Here we enjoy a magnificent view over Rumbach. On the descent to Rumbach, we hike past some old refuge tunnels that house endangered bats. Upon reaching Rumbach, we visit the Christ Church with its beautiful frescoes from the 12th century. The last kilometers of the Legends Trail lead us on forest paths up to the Schützenfelsen and from there through forest and meadows to Bruchweiler-Bärenbach. At the new Spießwiesen recreational park, we end our wonderful stage hike on the Felsenland Legends Trail after about 86 kilometers.
